Immigration · Status & Adjustments

Your immigration status, explained clearly.

Green card, renewals, adjustment of status — status questions touch your work, your family, and the right to stay. We sit down with you, review your full history, and tell you what is possible, what is risky, and what to do first.

What to expect

Before you file any form

In immigration, order matters. Filing the wrong form — or the right form at the wrong time — can close doors that were open. So we start with your complete history: entries and exits, prior filings, and any contact with police or the courts.

We help with adjustment of status (Form I-485) when a family petition allows it, with renewals, and with questions about the path to residence or citizenship. If your case calls for a specialty outside our practice, we say so — and refer you to a trusted attorney when we can.

FAQs

Status & Adjustments questions

Why do you ask for my whole history before answering a status question?

Because in immigration, the details decide the path. An old entry, a dismissed charge, a petition filed years ago — facts that seem minor often determine which options exist and which filings are safe.

What is adjustment of status?

Adjustment of status is applying for lawful permanent residence — a green card — from inside the United States on Form I-485, most often after an approved family petition. Whether adjustment or consular processing abroad is the right route depends on how you entered and on your history.

Does a criminal record affect my immigration status?

It can. Some offenses affect eligibility, and some make even filing risky. Because this firm practices criminal defense and immigration law under one roof, we review the record carefully before any USCIS filing — and when an Oregon criminal case is still open, we coordinate the two.
