Common questions
Straight answers, in plain language.
Do I really need a lawyer?
Most likely. The legal system can be overwhelmingly complex, and lawyers study for years to understand it. Hiring experienced counsel gives you the strongest position, whether you are facing a criminal charge, an accident injury, an immigration question, or an estate matter.
I'd like to schedule a consultation. How much does that cost?
It depends on the matter. For criminal defense and personal injury, the consultation is free. We will evaluate your case and explain your options at no charge. For immigration and estate planning, the initial consultation carries a modest flat fee, and you leave that meeting with concrete legal advice and a recommended next step. Calling or scheduling never costs anything.
I've heard legal fees can be complicated. Is that true?
They can be, but not ours. We work on a flat-fee basis for criminal cases. For most personal injury matters we work on a contingency fee. You pay nothing unless we recover for you. Either way, you'll know your cost up front.
Do I have to appear in court?
It depends. Depending on the type of hearing, you may or may not need to appear, or we may be able to schedule a telephonic appearance. We'll advise you ahead of time.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. Abraham Hanson is fluent in Spanish and represents Spanish-speaking clients directly, with no interpreter in between.
What kinds of criminal cases do you handle?
The full range. We defend DUII, domestic violence, assault, sex abuse and other Ballot Measure 11 charges, theft and forgery, drug crimes, and other felonies and misdemeanors in Oregon's state and federal courts. When a case is behind you, we also handle expungement to clear eligible convictions from your record, and the eligibility check is free.
What is a Ballot Measure 11 charge?
Ballot Measure 11 is an Oregon law setting mandatory minimum prison sentences for certain serious felonies, including most sex offenses, kidnapping, robbery, and major assault charges. Sex abuse offenses under Measure 11 carry minimums of 70 to 100 months. These cases require early, careful defense. Call us as soon as possible.
How long do I have to file an injury claim in Oregon?
Oregon generally allows two years for personal injury claims, but exceptions apply. Talk to us early so deadlines never decide your case.
Which courts do you appear in?
We practice in Oregon state courts, including the Yamhill, Marion, Polk, and Washington County circuit courts, and in the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. For serious cases we also appear in courts elsewhere in western Oregon, including Lincoln County on the coast.
What areas do you serve?
From our McMinnville office we serve Yamhill County and the wider Willamette Valley (Marion, Polk, Washington, and Clackamas counties, and into Linn County) including Salem, Newberg, Woodburn, Dallas, and Albany, along with the Oregon coast in Lincoln County. For serious criminal and injury matters we travel throughout western Oregon.
How quickly will you respond?
We aim to respond to consultation requests the same business day. For urgent criminal matters, call us directly at 503.472.3313.
